What are Aviane Birth Control Pills?

Aviane birth control pills are combination hormonal birth control pills used to prevent pregnancy. They contain the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel.

Similar to other birth control pills, Aviane works by preventing ovulation wherein the egg is released from an ovary. It also makes your cervical mucus thicker, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.

In addition to this, it makes the uterine lining thicker as well. Thus, it’s more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Aviane Dosage Information

Aviane dosage

For maximum effectiveness, the recommended Aviane dosage is one pill every 24 hours. It’s advisable not to exceed this interval and to take the pill at the same time every day.

Aviane birth control pills come in two forms— Aviane 21 and Aviane 28. Aviane 21 only contains 21 active pills, while Aviane 28 contains 21 active pills and 7 placebo/sugar pills.

If you’re on Aviane 21, take one orange pill every day for 21 consecutive days. Once you’ve finished the pills, you will have seven days of no pills. You should begin a new pack the day after the last no-pill day.

If you’re on Aviane 28, take one orange pill every day for 21 consecutive days. Once you’ve finished those pills, take the light green pills that do not contain the active ingredient for seven consecutive days. Be sure to begin a new pack the day after you have finished taking all of the inactive sugar pills.

In some cases, the Aviane dosage could change. This could depend on your body weight, medications and drug interactions, or other medical conditions. As such, if your healthcare practitioner has advised a different dose for you, be sure to follow his or her instructions.

What Happens if You Miss a Dose?

Missed Aviane dosage

Your risk of becoming pregnant increases each time you miss a dose. If you’ve missed a pill, take it as soon as you remember and take the next pill at your usual time. This means that you could take two pills on the same day.

If you miss two pills consecutively during the first two weeks of your cycle, take two pills as soon as you remember and two pills the next day. After that, you can resume your normal dose of one pill a day until you finish the pack.

At any time you miss a dose, use backup non-hormonal contraception if you’re sexually active within 7 days of the missed pill. If your doctor has prescribed a different dose, ask him/her what the correct procedure would be if you miss a pill (or pills).

The package insert will also have instructions on what to do in the event you miss one or more pills.
